EDWARD J. ERICKSON’S BOOK PRESENTATION 'PHASE LINE ATTILA, THE AMPHIBIOUS CAMPAIGN FOR CYPRUS, 1974'

On 20 January 2021, AVİM held an online presentation of the book presentation “Phase Line Attila, The Amphibious Campaign for Cyprus, 1974.” Dr. Edward J. Erickson, the co-author of this book with Dr. Mesut Uyar, discussed the military aspects of the Cyrus Peace Operation. In his presentation he focused on the planning and the execution of this joint amphibious campaign, which he identifies as a particularly successful operation. Prof. Erickson underlined that the operation in 1974 is an important example to be studied by the contemporary military planners.

Thank you for the presentation, Dr. Erickson. I knew that Ottoman Turks took over the island in 1571 from Venetians, gave it to protectorate of UK in 1878, and island gained its independence from the U.K in 1960. Sad to hear that Greeks ignored the constitution and tried to make island a province of Greece, attacked their Turkish neighbors and perpetrated a military coup in 1974 which leads to Turkey’s intervention and Cyprus Peace Operation. Thank you for the great analysis of the operation. I hope both Turks and Greek Cypriots will live side by side on their own states. I’ll be looking forward to read your book in May.

Excellent presentation. Dr. Erickson could have mention the events of 1960s as a prelude as to why the Turks started preparations for a possible invasion.
