It can be said that Sokullu (Sokolovic) Mehmet Pasha is the most well-known and respected among the Ottoman grand viziers. He was a Janissary and was educated at the Palace school due to his superior intelligence and abilities. He served as grand vizier during the reigns of Suleiman the Magnificent, Selim II and Murat III. He was married to the daughter of Selim II. One of his brothers was the high priest of the Serbian church. His father and other siblings became Muslims. They lived in Istanbul. He was one of the most influential and successful statesmen in the world of his time.

Possibly most priveledge corps of Ottoman army were Solaklar meaning left handeds and then Baltacılar meaning Men using axes. Solaklar, they protect directly sultan. They basically move with Sultan, live with Sultan. They are always around Sultan very close to him. Even grand veziers can not pass them. They managed Sultans visitors. They were part of Baltacılar core which basically protect Palace, sultans family, inner chanbers. These were selected from jannisaries. Most common features of these guards was that they were literally huge. Generally as tall as 2m. You can visit Topkapı Palace and see their chambers. Their seats are so high if you are not around 2m, your legs will not touch the floor when you sit

They were taken at young age, gjven to noble turkish family. From young age they were trained heavily.
Janissaries are not just soldiers. It's an Order. They were police, palace guard, soldier in battlefield.

Unlike what was portrayed in Hollywood movies, families were looking forward to have their child to be taken as part of janissary training. The chance of higher mortality rate and having a lavish, successful life were something these families hoping to get. It's a secured future

At that time, every family had many children and families gave their children voluntarily because they had more chances and duration of life in the Ottoman Empire.
