Thomas L. Friedman, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and foreign affairs columnist for The New York Times, spoke on how individuals and communities can survive and thrive in "the age of accelerations" on May 10 in the latest installment of the Eugene P. Wigner Distinguished Lecture Series.
Friedman's talk, titled "Thank You for Being Late: A Discussion of the Social, Political, Ethical and Economic Implications of the Age of Accelerations," was based on his latest book, which deals with the rapid advancement of economics, climate change and technology and their impact on modern society.

Just one more reason why I think that ORNL rocks as the institution. Great occasion, great person to visit, and a great privilege to had the opportunity to meet one of my favorite journalists.

There's a big difference between the positive and negative versions of the Golden Rule. The positive version says "Go do these things" and the negative version only says "Don't do these things". It's the negative one we should follow. The positive version is behind the worst actions behind religious activism. Friedman is clearly a religious person and says it doesn't matter which version you ascribe to, but he should think a bit more about this.
