According to the CDC, about 30% of adults 65 and older fall every year. In 2010, over 2 million older adults were treated for nonfatal injuries from falls and about 20,000 older adults died from falls. Although older adults are more likely to suffer nonfatal injuries, the injuries can be detrimental to their health. Older adults are at risk for severe injuries due to falls such as hip injuries, head injuries and severe cuts and bruises. Falls may be the result of poor health such as lack of exercise, cognitive disorders, inner ear problems which affect balance and other conditions. This webinar will highlight the burden of falls among aging populations throughout the U.S as well as provide information on the CDC's role in addressing older adult falls. Participants will be able to use falls prevention examples provided by the State of Oregon to institute in their own communities.
