I served in Iraq and Afghanistan - a total of four tours. The fact that republicans have simultaneously claimed sole proprietorship of patriotism and the flag is nauseating (and disingenuous). I had tears in my eyes during pres bidens ad - loved it and I hope people can appreciate the power of patriotism.

I'm a former Army officer and a lifelong progressive. It is very important for us to reclaim the flag and patriotism. But don't do what conservatives do. Don't wear the flag as running shorts and swim suits. Don't make it into tablecloths to be spilled on. Actually honor the flag in ways that conservatives don't. Just as we have to emphasize the difference in how conservatives and Democrats love and honor out country. Conservatives act they are little kids and you are attacking their mother. Democrats have a more adult love of country. We love our nation but that means we want to continue to work to make it even better. Our lives and our democratic country are counting on us to stay active and engaged and fight!

I have felt so low for such a long time. Paul Begala was so positive and makes so much sense, I want to make sure the Biden Team is listening to him. We need to reclaim our flag. I need to find my patriotism, again. We don't want to feel defeated!

I love the reclaming the flag part. As progressives we are generally hesitant to embrace open displays of nationalism, probably because it's the next door neighbor to fascism. Maybe it's time to learn a few phrases that have been rusty in our vocabulary like "thank you for your service" or "oh say can you see"
