I think the affinity for certain maps thing has more to do with people having agency in picking the maps they play rather than retiring old maps. Devs don’t like to just throw things away that they’ve invested time in. It makes more sense that they’d implement a map pick/ban phase similar to how premier works in CS2. If they do choose to go this route I would hope that they add a stats page in game for players to keep track of their map win rates

8:29 - I would have to agree, when I was more of a casual valorant player playing mostly unrated fracture wasn't a very loved map. Now that I am rather highly ranked I genuinely miss the map.

I think the “map affinity” section of blog points to them trying a “map pick” system like CS where you get to just queue for the maps you want to play, or adding some paper of map pick/ban system to ranked like how it is in Premier.

Assuming they plan to continue updating the map pool every act, which they should.
They need to start classifying maps by their playstyle and rotating them in and out with each other based on that. (Bind + Fracture (4 paths split into 2 lanes), Haven + Lotus (3 site), Ascent + Split + Sunset (2 site important mid trio), Pearl + Icebox(very open site/2 site complicated mid), Abyss + Breeze (maps that are too big))

At any given time the 7 map pool should have one from each group, a second from the 2 site important mid trio, and 1 "at large" more map from the remaining. Moving forward they should flip 2 duo groups, switch out one of trios and change the "at-large map" is (which would be a map that is not rotating out currently but once the next map comes out its possible it could be a map coming in) so we would have 3-4 maps in and 3-4 maps out per act.

Also obviously new maps should be assignable to a grouping based on core design as if the groupings are vague enough it shouldn't limit design space.

I dont think they should ever retire maps fully when it gets to a large amount of maps. Instead of losing maps for good, adopt a system similar to cs2 where pro play has a map pool and comp has every map in the game but the player has to select say 7 of the maps minimum to que so they cant play only one map that they like (because that wouldn't work in val for multiple reasons) letting people still play maps they love but still are forced to play with some variety in their queue so they have to get good at different types of maps. You could also make this system scale by rank if you want so once you hit say immortal and radiant you have to play the maps that are in the pro map pool only. Alot of things they can so with a system like that but those are just my ideas on what they could do with it when they hit a higher amount of maps.

7:00 I have not grown and affinity for pearl while it’s been gone. I think pearl b site is probably the site in the game.

At some point, I hope they add a one site map. It initially sounds like a terrible idea, bu I think it could work if the site was huge and complex. Imagine if you stuck Icebox A site and bind B site right next to each other. The site would be like a maze, with lots of close angels, and lots of entry and exit points. The size of the site would make it easy for attackers to take some part of it to plant, but the defenders would have very short rotation times, so post plants would have to rely heavily on flanking for both sides. It would be a pain to design, but if they made it work it could be very enjoyable.

It would also be neat to see a map where the sites were stacked vertically on top of one another. There could be a few extreme high and low angels, and a fakes would be interesting with the ability (or lack thereof) to fake sounds because we cannot hear where a sound is originating from vertically.

When fracture came out, I was between bronze-silver and the map was so annoying to play and was generally hated in these lobbies (more than breeze I would say), it was annoying if you are gonna play site alone with your teammates getting smoked without a call and not helping you, having less awareness so it was difficult to hold multiple sides. When I started improving and getting into diamond-ascendant lobbies it started to feel better to play, you can call sides pushes, I started becoming a lurker, I started fighting mains pretty much almost every round and it grew on me a bit. I can see why they would not bring it back due to the casual majority.

Removing Icebox again while it was gone for 1.5 years and there for half a year is fucking crazy.
The only thing that could make this map pool more worse is by replacing Split with Breeze

Riot will never do this but a map maker would absolutely make this game more competitive solely due to the eventuality a great map will be made for esports and will be recognized
