Shinken Gata is a concept in traditional Japanese Martial Arts that denotes the intention of training with realistic attacks and resistance. Rather than throwing our Kamae (postural integrity) and Kata (technical patterns) out the window when the volume is cranked up, Adrian emphasizes the importance of retaining a calm mindset and maintaining your kamae and kata when flustered. That's the difference between bringing your training down to the level of your fighting, or bringing your fighting up to the level of your training.

In this video Adrian is demonstrating the technical aspect of what we were to practice. For demonstrative purposes, a certain level of compliance from the partner was necessary, but as we practiced together, we specifically resisted our partner's attempts to apply the technique. Under those conditions, without overcoming the opponent with strength, it is impossible to apply the technique without every part of the kata, kamae, and movement remaining in tact. Conversely, when the whole body moves as one, and structural integrity is maintained, it requires little physical strength to move against forceful resistance and is very difficult to resist.

This was an awesome and exhausting (in a good way) seminar hosted by Toronto Bujinkan Dojo (insta: @torontobujinkan) and our very own dojo. If you missed out and live in the GTA, get in touch to be notified of future events!
