One of the deadliest wildfires in the United States in recent years leveled homes and businesses on the lush Hawaiian island of Maui this past Tuesday. Correspondent Jonathan Vigliotti reports on how residents and tourists were caught off-guard by the fast-moving flames, turning postcard-perfect Lahaina into ruins, as officials warn the number of dead could rise significantly in the weeks to come.

In 2010 I lost everything to a wild fire but luckily we received a reverse 911 call telling us to evacuate. Thank god we had time to get out. My thoughts are with the families. ❤

This is heart shattering. So much lost. Families, loved ones, pets, businesses. People’s entire lives gone. My prayers are with all of them. I can’t even imagine how one recovers from such an epic tragedy. May God give them strength in the days ahead.

I've lived through earthquakes and hurricanes, but can't even imagine the horror of this.

So much love to the citizens of Lahaina, the island of Maui and the state of Hawaii. The banyan trees are proof of your resilience.

I was there in Feb (2023). I'm stunned that its all gone. I'm looking up people who worked there to see if they are okay. One girl that ran the whale watching lost her house.
Lahaina was one of the best parts of my Maui trip. As far as I'm concerned it was the heart of Maui. So many people worked there. Tourists flocked there. And it was where many people caught their boats to go out on the ocean. It's a huge loss. And finally, the amazing Lahaina Banyan Tree. I hope it will survive. Time will tell.

Maui’s beautiful island and their historic town gone…i was amazed how paradise that place was calm peaceful…full of aloha spirit. Love to comeback again once they rebuild and support their local businesses. I was there in may this year as solo-trip this year before class started and first trip since covid and one of my bucket list. I would drive by there many times.

I have been there years ago. Lahaina seemed like a very hot place and very dry. Even then I was uncomfortable there because of that, and am not surprised this happened.

I just can't express how sad i am over the loss of human and animal lives this week...and so quickly...i just can't stop thinking about Maui.
I lived on Oahu for 25 years and used to go over to Lahaina once in a while. I liked looking over at Lanai from Front Street and have photos if myself in the huge (then 100 yr. Old banyan tree). I'm glad to hear it may survive....
God Bless Everyone involved and may they have the resilience to survive this horror! Always My Aloha!❤😢

The Lahaina that grew out of the 60's, 70's and 80's was truly a special place, no place is perfect but that special convergence of aloha between locals and respectful newcomers was magical like hey maybe this isn't a fantasy maybe humans can live together in good will and live by the golden rule. Sadly it will never be rebuilt the way it was. Even before the fire things have changed as society has changed. Lahaina and west Maui will rebuild and hopefully prosper one day, but I don't think it even makes sense to try to replicate the old magical Lahaina, society has changed, its just not going to happen now.

We went to Maui in 2021. Beautiful island. People were very nice with small businesses. Still have pictures taken under the shade of Huge tree in Lahaina city. It’s a special place. Some people said it is 100yrs old tree. I saw it today in this video. Still tree is there without leaves. SAD to see burnt buildings. Can rebuild buildings but can’t bring back nature.

Watch the news conference held yesterday Saturday in Wailuku for facts. The fire spread so fast there was no time for the warning system to go off.
