The reason why people think the ending sucks is because what everyone expected to happen didn't happen. But that doesn't necessarily make the ending a bad ending, because if you look at it from a different perspective, there was a lot of unresolved tension and had the ending been the way the mass wanted to, the problems would not have been resolved, rather, more would've arise

But the amv is beautiful and very touching

Everybody always says that the ending to this isn't what they wanted, and most likely what they wanted was for Naruse and Sakagami to end up together like in the ending of most anime, where the female and male protagonist. Well, Anthem of the Heart focuses on more mature themes and helps to contradict the idea that if you love someone hard enough they will eventually fall for you. Sakagami was his own person with his own feelings, something Naruse couldn't control.
A bit more context for this idea we all have that life is perfect is to look at Naruse's childhood, she was young and full of life. She sought out a fairy tale ending where a prince would save her, which is where her intrigue with the "castle" came into play. Still young, Naruse told her mother about her father's affair at the "castle", and she single handedly broke apart her family. Her regret manifested as a fairy egg. Those fairy tales she once loved sealing away her ability to speak so that she no longer could ruin anything.
Anthem of the Heart has a moral of life is not a fairy tale, so not getting the happy ending we thought we expected isn't a terrible thing because Naruse found her voice, her mother finally stopped unconsciously hating her, and she even found a new love along the way in the form of Tasaki.
Just because it isn't the ending we wanted, doesn't mean it isn't a happy ending nonetheless.

I love how anime’s can really bring a person to a different reality, that can be beauty, pain, sorrow, and happiness. Different realities that really make us feel in many ways, leaving us to question our selfs..

This movie hit me right in the feels - although my parents never divorced. BUT

I do believe both Nuruse's parents were to blame. One, her mother told her not to speak of her father's affair ever again. Then, the dad basically put all the blame for the divorce on their daughter.
