Nineveh and the Archaeological Evidence

In 19th century Victorian Britain, incredulity towards the Bible had begun to set in bringing the Bible’s historicity into question. In the ‘Post-Age of Enlightenment’ period many scholars had eroded the confidence in the accuracy of scripture. However, when Layard produced his first book “Nineveh and its Remains” it became a bestseller and rejuvenated a dying faith in the public consciousness. Other than the Old Testament and an obscure description of ruins by Greek historian Xenophon, in 400 BC, there was no other historical record to prove the existence of Nineveh. The city had long since been considered a myth. What Austen Layard ultimately discovered were the records of kings and their conquests which directly paralleled the biblical account.

That was interesting. I was studying Cushites today mentioned in the Bible and they have found archeological evidence of the Cushites in Sudan. So seeing this today just added another to the hundreds of verifiable people, places or prophecies that are in the Bible. A book written by I believe 40 authors over 1600 years, on 3 different continents in different languages, by people who did not know each other. And when the Dead Sea Scrolls, written a thousand years ago, were found, they matched our current Bible. So nothing was changed or lost in translation. They actually count every word in a line etc. If a page didn't have the correct number it was discarded and the page was done again. That is how careful they were to make sure nothing was changed before we had copy machines, printers, typing machines etc. I am 100% confident the Bible was written by man with God's assistance.

I had mum send me one of Austin's books while locked up in federal prison. Now I read a kabillion books, however this particular book was a time machine. It truly transports the reader along with Austin and his adventures, to the great hospitality the Arabs showed, to the marauding bandits.. it leaves nothing out. The hardships, the achievements, the sickness that accompanied travelers in far flung regions of the world. I left that book behind in the library of the largest federal prison for others to enjoy and learn from. Not only is it an immersed experience, but truly makes the KJV so much more appreciated. A man uses the Bible to verify the Bible. Brilliant! - Surry Virginia

Before Covid I would often go to the Black Obelisk in the British Museum. I have picked up three books on the Assyrian language (it is called Akkadian) that uses the cuneiform alphabet. I can read the bit about Jehu in the original language. I am not perfect at it yet. There are two other rooms with friezes from the walls of the palaces at Nineveh at the museum. One of the rooms has a depiction of the siege at Lachish. It shows the whole story of the siege. There is a cuneiform inscription on it that says that Senacherib was there and it names the town as Lachish which is the second most important town of Judea. The Taylor Prism is in the museum which tells the story of the war against Judah and how Hezekiah, the king of Judah, was "like a bird in a cage in Jerusalem, his royal city". It does not say that Senacherib took over Jerusalem. The Taylor Prism agrees perfectly with the account in the Bible. The other room from Nineveh has a part of it where they left the soot on the friezes. The soot is the original soot from the fire when Nineveh was destroyed in 612 BC.

Close to the Black Obelisk there is a frieze that shows the first people from the 10 tribes to be exiled from israel. It shows the exile from the town of Ashteroth (Ashtartu in Assyrian) (the "oth" ending of Ashterorth is the feminine plural in Hebrew. "Tu" is the feminine plural in Assyrian.) It is from 732 BC when the first exile was done. The British Museum explains that this is the case on the internet. The sign at the museum does not explain any of this detail at all. A number of the signs in the museum do not give the really interesting information at all. The main exile of the whole of the ten tribes was in 722 BC. When you look at the clothes of the people on the frieze the clothes are exactly the same as for Jehu & the Israelites on the Black Obelisk. The other parts of the obelisk have people with different clothes.

They said in the last days, the ancient people of Nineveh in the time of Jonah, will rise to judge the people of this world of their sins, is this true ?

Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed. John 20:29 I believe the bible 100% and I don't need proof to believe. However, I think it's pretty cool that there is evidence to prove the Bible! Our God is an awesome God!

So God sends Jonah to change his enemies minds. Little did Jonah know it would save the lives of many after the “enlightenment” period.

That’s pretty amazing

Not noted in this presentation is that Sennacherib stated WHY he did not destroy Jerusalem.

He stated that Hezekiah's army deserted him and joined the Assyrian army.

So Hezekiah no longer had an army to resist the Assyrians with.

He also stated that Hezekiah surrendered up his daughters as hostages to the Assyrian King, to assure the king there would be no future revolts against Assyrian authority.

He also claimed booty (Gold and Silver) was surrendered to the Assyrian King, and that a heavy yearly tribute was imposed on Hezekiah, being sent to Nineveh.

He also took parts of Hezekiah's kingdom (Judah) and gave it to neighboring non-Jewish kings.

As to the death of the Assyrian king by his two sons, that event event happened some 20 years later, after the fall of Jerusalem to the Assyrians.

To read the Bible account, one is left thinking Sennacherib was slain by his sons SHORTLY after his return to Nineveh from Jerusalem, instead of 20 years later.

All in all, the biblical account is fiction when compared to the Assyrian records.

Yes, an army was destroyed at Jerusalem, but it wasn't an Assyrian army, it was Hezekiah's army deserting him to join the Assyrian army.

Critics of the Bible believe in black holes, yet they have never seen one.

A gourd shaped sign in the sky which appeared and then disappeared from the Nineveh horizon was enough of a sign for those Gentiles to become believers. BEFORE our Lord was sent into the garden called earth last. Memory of the Ninevites as recorded in the old testament has never disappeared from the consciousness of all Gentile and Jewish believers.

Yes, the later parts of the Old Testament are largely accurate and based on real historical events. That doesn't mean that earlier parts, like the various stories found in Genesis, reflect actual history. Knowing where to draw the line between myth and history is the tricky part.

Secular evidence should never be used to affirm the Bible for believers. The Bible should be the one infallible truth that believers use to confirm worldly findings.

Islamic state accidently found evidence of Ninevah's repentance digging tunnels under what was believed to be Jonah's tomb, even tho' e they ruined most of it, after they fled , Iraqi archeologists found statues and wall reliefs turned upside down, which was a common act of repentance in ancient times, so by Islamic state trying to destroy the Bible, they unintentionally found evidence of it, shows God has a sense of humour.
