Years ago, when my son was 13, he started losing his ability to walk. We worked with many neurologists, geneticists, etc. to try to determine what was wrong with him. The doctors thought he had something progressive and in-the-brain, but they could not determine what it was or how to treat it. It took four years of watching him go downhill and waiting for the next shoe to drop before he was chosen as a research subject in NIH's Undiagnosed Disease Program. It took their multidisciplinary team less than one week to arrive at a diagnosis and lay out a path forward. Government research is priceless when you need it, and no one can say that they will never need it.
