In 1988, when award winning director and producer Sir Peter Jackson’s team of location scouts found this land called Alexander farm. It is about 1,250 acre sheep farm located in Waikato district in New Zealand. They noted that this area has similar elements as those of the Shire as described by Tolkien in the novel.
With the help of New Zealand Army, in March 1999, 39 Hobbit Holes were created across the 12 acre plot used for the set. It took nine months to complete the Shire. Strict security measures were put in place by the production company throughout construction and filming to keep it as a secret.
It is a known fact that David Wenham while shooting the Seachange in Australia disappeared from that show to act in Hobbiton. It was kept as a secret where he was gone.
Filming commenced in December 1999.
Guided tours commenced in 2002 with the remaining 17 bare plywood facades after initial demolition
In 2009, when Sir Peter Jackson produced his film The Hobbit trilogy, he left behind the construction we see today. 44 permanently reconstructed Hobbit holes.
In 2012, Green Dragon Inn was opened as the finale to the journey, where you get a free refreshing beverage from the Hobbit Southfarthing Range.

The artificial tree:
This tree is not real. It is made of fiberglass and its leaves are made from silk and are attached to the tree one by one. There is a person paid for repaint each one by hand when they fade in the sun.
