Mike Tyson vs Tyrell Biggs - Full Fight - 10-16-1987

Bout Summary:

One after another they landed on Tyrell Biggs' jaw. Left hooks from everywhere, world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson pumping them in as if he were pitching batting practice. And for six rounds Biggs, the 1984 Olympic superheavyweight champion, caught them as if he were Yogi Berra. But finally, inevitably, Biggs would have enough. It ended at 2:59 of the seventh round Friday night when still another Tyson left hook sent Biggs flying into his corner, where his body thudded to the canvas with his feet in the air. Thus, Tyson rang up his 32d professional victory without a defeat, his 28th by knockout, successfully defending his unified heavyweight championship and handing Biggs his first pro defeat. He is now 15-1. Tyson's victory set up a Jan. 23 match, probably here, against former heavyweight champion Larry Holmes. Although the end came with only a second remaining in the round, it appeared over about a minute earlier when Biggs stumbled, in part from a Tyson punch, in part from exhaustion. However, the challenger regained his feet as referee Tony Orlando reached the count of nine. But few in boxing today can finish off a stumbling opponent better than Tyson. He attacked Biggs with his crashing left hook, and the gallant Philadelphian, also fighting off a deep cut over his right eye since the third round, was finished. For a short while, at least, during the first round, Biggs did what some said he could do to Tyson, keeping him away with sharp jabs while taking blows to the chin with seeming ease. But Tyson began to wear Biggs down, landing often with his left hook, an occasional sharp jab of his own and some quick rights. Biggs absorbed them all but failed to keep circling and flinging in his jab, making the final outcome clear to those on hand.

Match Date: October 16, 1987

People forget, this was a huge fight at the time. Tyrell Biggs was an undefeated (15-0) Olympic Gold Medalist from the legendary 1984 U.S. American boxing team. Biggs is in his prime here at 26, with recent wins over Renaldo Snipes and Quick Tillis. Tyson is still just 21, and the biggest star in boxing.

This was a very personal fight for Mike Tyson. He had a lot of animosity towards Biggs for the way he treated Mike when he didn’t make the Olympic team. Mike didn’t even check on Biggs after the fight like he normally did to his opponents. Mike could have knocked him out earlier but he wanted to punish Biggs.

This was Mike's highwater mark imo, he was at his peak beating the best heavyweights available: Smith, Thomas, Tucker, and then Biggs. Mike became more of a boxer as these fighters took him into later rounds. Also, Jim Jacobs and Bill Cayton were still managing him. They had a plan to get Mike to break Rocky Marciano's undefeated record then have him retire. They were teaching him the boxing business and how to manage and be a promoter since he was a teenager and wanted him retired by 26. Kevin Rooney in the corner too. These people were Mike's family. Mike was ultimately ruined by Don King and his sham trainers.

I like how people say Tyson couldn't beat Wilder because Wilder is too tall, yet he regularly dismantled 6'5"-6'6" opponents

Love how in the first round Biggs was moving like Ali. Then Tyson lands a few punches and in the second round Biggs is flat footed .

Tyson later would say he was mad Biggs laughed at him while training in Colorado because Mike was an alternate on the 1984 Olympic boxing team. Every chance Biggs got he made a big deal about how Tyson was a wannabe not really on the boxing team. Biggs also was very disrespectful and talked openly about how small Mike Tyson was and not a real heavy Weight, so I happy he bloodied and beat him up. Tyson would also said he purposely extended the fight and elbowed him in the face because he hated Biggs very much from their armature days. Good job Mike this was one of your best victories.

Destroying an undefeated Olympic Gold Medalist is always a damn impressive win to have on your resume. After beating Spinks and Holmes, on paper I think you can argue this is anywhere between Tyson's 3rd-5th biggest win

This is the second Tyson fight Michael Buffer introduced, and the first Tyson fight where he did his signature "Let's get ready to rumble!". Little trivia for ya there. Great line and delivery. The crowd gets into it, and normally they ignore the announcer completely until they say one of the boxers' names.

When Biggs started dropping his head after the end of each round and no longer making eye contact with Mike, ...you knew he was defeated.

THE reason why biggs is not keeping his hands up cos Tyson is smashing him too the body, ,

I think the body shot at 27:14 is why Biggs kept his hands low for the fight, because he didn't want those landing again. What makes this fight so brutal is that by round 4 Tyson knew he could win this, and intentionally grinded him down till Biggs had nothing left, then went for the kill in R7. (per Tyson's own comments after the fight)

Biggs was never the same after this fight. Going in he was an undefeated Olympic gold medalist. When he walked out of the ring he was a broken fighter. Very similar to when Felix Trinidad beat David Reid. Reid was also a young undefeated fighter going into that fight with Tito. About the same record as Biggs. And Reid was also an Olympic Gold medalist. He was one of the rising young stars in boxing. But Tito beat him so bad that he was just never the same
