Don't eat crumbs from your own table: put yourself first

Buy my book, "The Value of Others"

You only have so many good hours -- the "golden time" of focused productivity -- on any given day. This is the window of time in which you are at your peak mental and emotional functioning. To whom are you dedicating this time? Most people sacrifice these hours to the enrichment of their employers. Make sure you're not simply contenting yourself with what's left at the end of the day.

PsycHacks provides viewers with a brief, thought-provoking video several days a week on a variety of psychological topics, inspired by my clinical practice. The intention is for the core idea contained within each video to inspire viewers to see something about themselves or their world in a slightly different light.

What great advice! This is definitely a struggle for us. My wife and I both have had setbacks in life that basically bankrupted us and we had to start over in our mid 30's. Now in our mid 40's we have things on track but it has come at the expense of just work, work, work, all the time. Having our ducks in a row, enjoying our golden years with young kids, seems to be a mirage that we never reach. I get this "Cat's in the cradle" feeling that we will never have time for them until they're adults and out of the house. We need change but it's hard, we're still having to work all the time to keep the lights on.

I like the good doctor’s take on this message. The only thing I would add, which my mentor gave me years ago, would be if you don’t have four hours find 30 minutes; every day.

That made all the difference especially with a fully time job and three, very young kids.

The flip side is that if you don’t make the time, you won’t have that time.

Well, if I spend some of my evening time watching your videos, is the time really lost? I don't t think so.
That being said, you speak words of wisdom.
I found your channel one weak ago and it is amazing.

I agree on the What, but now talk more about the How. How do you resolve the issue of working for a living wage (practical) vs living for yourself (ideal)?

I knew immediately what you meant when you said it. I want to be free of the 9 to 5 but figuring out a skill I can do on the side is....difficult to say the least

Thank you for this video. There is a lot of truth in it. But I personaly love my job, and I am more motivated when I work, because I do something meaningful. I don't have more energy on weekends and holidays, but less somehow. I am happy to be a doctor. And it was good, that I could work even in Covid pandemic. I would have gone mad without it.

This one is a crusher. I normally don't think this way. Apart from starting my own business, or working a part time job or I guess having funky work hours to preserve my "golden hours" what could I do to put myself first?

Great idea, but could you please provide an example of how to do this?

I’d love some examples of how to do this when you work full time and are raising children.

I've often thought that the 8 hour work day was curated to get the maximum amount of work out of a person, whilst leaving them just enough free time to carry out personal tasks.

I used to charge more for my "brightest hours" and less for my "dumb hours", in cases where I can control the charging. But at the end I still got crumbs!
