In my adventures interviewing artists there are definitely some major pinch me moments. There are times when I’m sitting there and it will hit me, i’m talking to someone who has not only changed music history but world history. When I interviewed Lamont Dozier one of the legendary human beings who created the blue print of popular music as we know it Lamont is of course the rock and roll hall of fame producer writer of Holland Dozier Holland one of the most successful writing teams ever! Ever!. The only team from that time that was more successful were the Beatles.
For those of you who don’t know, Lamont Dozier has produced and cowritten 14 number one hits for Everyone from The Four Tops, The Supremes and Phil Collins. Along with brothers Brian and eddie Holland he was responsible for much of the motown sound that brought about social change in the 60s. They were behind sound of young america in the most revered decade of music the 60s.
I also had the chance to talk with Duke Fakir the last living member of the Four Tops. What follows is the direct story of the major hit for the Four Tops, a classic song that has charted several times with several different version. Baby I Need Your Lovin. It went to #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1964 and selling a million copies, a few years later Johnny Rivers took the song to #3 at Billboard Hot 100 and #1 in canada.
