You are the world's best Makita tool reviewer, hands down. Makita should sponsor you for unbiased reviews.

I still use my 14.4 Panasonic Drill and Impact which I purchased on Amazon in the USA in 2008. Around 2016 or so I noticed the same tools rebranded as GREENLEE and I bought them. The 14.4v Panasonic and GREENLEE tools and batteries are interchangeable. I have both.

Tools, man you are the best Makita review channel ever. Thank you for what your doing! I just wanted to say that i have the starlock multitool the black US version and put a 3ah 18v battery on it and it does work. Also i bought a pack of 8 used 3ah 14.4v older batteries without the indicator on ebay for 100 dollars and those batteries 14.4v work on the multitool also. The batteries do a good job

My original 18V tools also have that tab. Ended up removing the tab to use the new batteries.

Just tried the DTM52 with two different 18V 3A batteries and works great!

I have a ddf470 with a 3ah 18V battery. Its used and I got it at a good price. I use it around the house. The clutch is defective, want to replace it. Its brushless. Will using the 18V battery for long time damage the drill?

It would be interesting to see a comparison of legacy Makita systems vs. modern ones. Just how much more power is in a LXT or XGT drill driver vs a 14.4 or NiMH? I see the NiMh drills on estate sales and Craigslist all the time in the New York area.

On a side note, do you notice much of a difference between the 18 Volt 5.0 Ah Makita battery, and the 6.0 Ah battery? I’m trying to decide if it is worth it getting the 6.0 batteries, for use in a angle grinder, and my 36 Volt LXT saws?

Green lights are definitely better on a bar gauge. I can easily read them on my Metabo HPT (Hikoki) MultiVolt batteries, in strong light, versus red lights. All the newer laser levels are using green lights.

Cheers!

I feel Makita only still makes a few 14.4V machines because they don't want to piss off people who bought into 14.4V a lot. In Japan they do the most 14.4V equivalents of 18V tools, but in Europe you see less and less. You save almost no weight vs 18V and 12V tools have improved to a point where 14.4V is pretty much obsolete.

Well that explains why my ML801 light is billed as 18V/14.4V on the package. Now I wish I'd ordered some of the 14.4's along with it.

What voltage does the A battery cut out at?

what's the smallest 14.4 to work in an 18volt tool? theoretically could you use the teeny tiny 1.5ah 14.4v battery?

How well does the 14.4V 3.0Ah battery work on the 18V impact? Would make a great lightweight setup, especially as you can use the same charger.

will a 14.4v 1.5ah lxt battery work on my td173? i know it'll make it slower and impact weaker but it works for me since i drive a lot of smaller fasteners. thanks!

I tried the DTM52Z with a 3.0 Ah battery and it worked fine. 1.5Ah is locked out with the tab.

Very interesting. I wonder what the compatibility between the LXT and XGT is, as I’ve just broke into the 40v platform, can you charge them on LXT chargers?? ✌️

The majority of my Makita 14.4v batteries are before the battery guage but are still going strong.
Most of my 14.4v tools will not accept genuine Makita 18v batteries but do accept clone 18v batteries. The brushed tools don't like the extra voltage and smell like they are burning out the motor. However all my brushless 14.4v tools work with no issues.
I have migrated many of my tools to 18v now due to the problems of sourcing 14.4 batteries in the UK. Also, if they are available they are more expensive than the 18v.
I prefer 14.4v when using my impact driver, drill and small rotary hammer, as they are lighter and easier to use while up a ladder. However the extra grunt from the 18v batteries is welcomed for most of my other tools.
