Dive into my review of "The Electric State," Netflix’s 2025 sci-fi adventure directed by the Russo Brothers! Starring Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, Ke Huy Quan, Woody Harrelson, Anthony Mackie, and more, this $320 million blockbuster promises a retro-futuristic thrill ride—but does it deliver? Released on March 14, 2025, "The Electric State" is out today. Watch to hear my thoughts on the visuals, cast performances, and whether it lives up to the hype!

Set in an alternate 1990s after a robot uprising, "The Electric State" follows Michelle (Millie Bobby Brown), an orphaned teen searching for her lost brother, Christopher (Woody Norman). Teaming up with smuggler Keats (Chris Pratt) and his wisecracking robot Herman (voiced by Anthony Mackie), she journeys through the American Southwest with a mysterious bot, Cosmo. Along the way, they encounter quirky robots—like Mr. Peanut (Woody Harrelson)—and uncover a sinister plot tied to tech genius Ethan Skate (Stanley Tucci) and Dr. Amherst (Ke Huy Quan). It’s a wild mix of nostalgia, adventure, and tech-driven chaos!

Personally, I dont think the movie is terrible on a basic competency level. It's watchable.

The problem is that it's forgettable. The movie feels so safe and by the numbers. The characters, the story beats, I had these elements clocked the moment they came on screen, no surprises whatsoever. I want something to come at me from an interesting angle. To grab me with a bit of creativity. But all of the individual pieces of this movie you've seen better elsewhere.

This is the very definition of a 5/10 movie. It's watchable. That's about it.

Novocaine cost less than 5% of this movie's budget. Yet somehow, it looks more expensive.

I didn’t think it was that bad but severely underwhelming given the cast and budget. It’s insane this is a top 15 most expensive movie and it’s straight to Netflix.

I quite like it tbh, I think it’s like Fallout & Ready Player One combined, and the acting is great, I’m halfway through and I’m enjoying it personally but I’m an engineer and a fan of this genre so seeing the cool robots interacting with humans is always gonna awesome to me, and these ones have actual character, I don’t see how people don’t like this tbh

Chris Pratt in this film and Jason Momoa in A Minecraft Movie would make one hell of a rock n roll duo.

Great review man. Hard to find good reviews nowadays. Had fun with this one. Felt honest.

The original Electric State is a work by Simon Stalenhag. The TV Show “Tales from the Loop” is also based on some of his wonderful art. That one captured the sometimes rather dark implications of various scifi concepts quite well.

This movie is underrated! Sure, it's not pure cimina like "The Godfather" or "Oceans Eleven" but the casting was great, the characters were deep, it had excellent world building and it gives you a roller coaster of emotions.

The reason this movie doesn't have the same tone as the novel Is because of the high budget. When you spend needlessly so much money you have to appeal to everyone in order to make up for the high costs. That means it has to be as generic as possible with Marvel humour.

The main problem with this movie is that it suffers from an overly complex plot. First: You have to get the audience to accept that this is an alternate timeline or dimension. Secondly: You have to get the audience used to robots existing there. Thirdly: Introduce a robot/human war. Fourthly: Introduce the neuro link concept where humans enter robot bodies. And finally you literally start the story there. That's a lot of stuff to cram down an audience's throat.

All of these robot dystopias always beg the question " WHY did you make robots capable of being sad?" The only one I can think of that was brave enough to attempt an answer was Spielberg's AI (2001).

3:00 By contrast, for me, I felt like the opening scene was the best part of the movie, mainly because we weren’t getting assaulted by MCU style quips and whatever quips remained suited Michelle’s relationship with her brother, and there’s a heartfelt sincerity that the other scenes didn’t have, mainly because the brother wasn’t there and whatever drama remains afterward is ruined by the humor and jokes.

While the movie definitely had some rough spots, and I REALLY want to read the book now, I liked the movie a lot, mostly cuz I got heavy “Ready Player 1” vibes. I liked the movie, but I think I’ll LOVE the book when I read it.

I liked hearing Taco play the songs on piano without the words in the movie. Like when she was giving her speech at the end and the instrumental to Wonderwall was playing in the background. Nice.
