Little lifehack for Java: when you are in f3 mode, somewhere on the right of the screen it tells you what sort of block you are looking at, so you can scan lava lakes with this method and find diamonds without seeing them

The reason why diamonds spawn "more" around lava is because in each chunk, there's a diamond ore vain, and lava lakes under ground tend to take up those chunks giving more clear space for you to look around. Because of this it's easier to find diamonds that would normally be hidden behind stone blocks since lava lakes cleared those stone blocks up.

I recently tried this in my survival world. I have all the footage as well, might use it.

It took me about 50 minutes to drain a large lava lake by hand and iron bucket but with Fortune III I collected 43 diamonds.

I know for sure in the beta days I had it in my head that finding lava usually meant finding diamond. Interesting to see an actual study into it.

fun fact, if you place another bucket of lava over the source block it still empties the lava bucket while keeping the lava on the floor, pretty much you can make an entire lava lake into one block of lava

this is why I always have a grudge against lava in my worlds. I've drained entire pools cuz of this philosophy, and i do not regret it in the slightest!

If the point is to test a bunch of different lava pools, why restrict yourself to survival mode? Wouldn't going into creative and getting a way bigger range of tests be more beneficial to testing a theory?

Probably would've been better to do this in creative so it goes faster and you get a bigger sample size. We're trying to prove just how often we're passing up diamonds when we avoid lava, not the feasibility of draining lava pools.

I think the whole "diamonds spawn around lava" myth is due to the way lava pools generate. when they generate, they also clear a small bit of area around them, mostly up, which would reveal ores you would have otherwise not seen. this combined with the fact that lava and diamonds spawn at the same level, and the chances are decently high that you should find diamonds around lava lakes, not because they actually spawn more around them, but just because its easier to find them around lava lakes (but its also easier to find everything else)
