although I may not play it, the wandering village stood out to me as truly unique and inspiring. it is so nice to have gems like that come along and break up the monotony.

I already have Dawn of Man and Planetbase since last year and I loooove them <3 It's very easy to play, excellent for between if you got a bit bored, and has not so much storyline. But for me it's perfect and I could start it over and over again with pleasure. By the way.... the music is so soothing too when you play the games <3 High recommendations so far from me! Surviving Mars is cool too, but I think I am a bit too stupid to play it :D I get very low on specific resources very soon and need more time to get the hang of it, but I still love it and would recommend it. The same for Ostriv and Timerborn! <3 Didn't think that I would see so many games in this video I already played. But its really cool and I am very glad for it because in my opinion.... these games need to shine and I hope a lot more people would fall in love with them <3

After watching the list of games here, it leaves me with a feeling to revisit categorisation. I felt that Banished-like, Frost-Punk like, Rimworld-Like, Factorio-like, Anno-like, Tropico-like, Simcity-like etc need to be evaluated. I'm going to use Steam's labels as a reference because Steam is an ubiquitous platform. According to Steam, most of these games are listed with one or more labels: Colony-Sim, Survival, City-Building, Business Management etc.

Naturally many of the games we play today and will be playing have branched out or inspired from popular games we know: Sims, Simcity, City Skylines, Anno, Tropico, and Settlers. These were games released during the 2000s. By the 2010s the release of Minecraft was a total game changer. It was a Sims like game with city building elements.

Then came along Banished, which expanded city building with a bit of Sims like elements, closely resembling Minecraft. This spawned many Banished like games. Then came along Factorio and Rimworld.

I would call Factorio as inspired by Minecraft or a Minecraft derivative because it is just like Minecraft without additional players. Even as multiplayer has been added recently in Factorio, playing Singleplayer is the meta. On the otherhand Rimworld is very much a hybridisation of Banished and Minecraft. And so spawned Rimworld like games.

Then we saw the arrival of Frostpunk, which is very much like Banished, and nothing like Minecraft, Factorio, Sims, Simcity/City Skylines or Rimworld. And so started the trend of Frostpunk like games.

It kind of becomes challenging to define what makes a game Banished like versus Frostpunk like, Rimworld like, Anno like, Tropico like as games continue to hybridise features.

This is amazing! I know it's been a year since this came out but it still holds up as of Dec 29, 2023. Thank you for this list!

I actually LOVE Ancient Cities! :) It's recently had quite a lot of updates and the developers are taking player feedback into account quite a lot I feel. I really enjoy playing it. :)

I have played this game to death and still adore it. Admittedly Going Medieval is holding my attention pretty firmly.

No joke, DAWN OF MAN is the most underrated of games in my opinion

Great video really appreciate your time and effort to make it!! Another game i'm really enjoying atm is Manor Lords. Almost exactly the same as Banished ( which I love to death) but also includes real time battle which has a very similar army unit control and feel as a total war battle. It's still in development atm, and it was created by the solo developer Greg Styczeń of Slavic Magic. It's still not finished and has limited tech development atm but still very playable as it is. Highly recommend!!

I loved this video, and with 250-ish hours in Banished, I wanted something new. I added a few new things to my wishlist, and even remembered that I already bought Endzone World Apart - I just forgot!

Such an extensive list that I'm surprised you missed Manor Lords. It's very early access but shows promise for realism of simulation. Otherwise my favorites on this list is Ostriv, just because it finally breaks the pattern of grids.

Banished is a legend. Further Frontiers is great game, too bad it's only available on Steam...
Dawn of Man is good, but loses grip the more you play. At least when I played few years ago.
Same with Endzone, but looks like it got tons of new content since I last played.
Looking forward for new project from Basished creator, but as solo creator it will be hard to pull out second time...

Foundation reminds me a lot of an old lesser known, but rather good game called Medieval Lords: Build Defend Expand. It also had some object manipulation features and allowed for some really nice looking medieval village building. Kind of want to play it again after looking at some screenshots.

It did have a few quirks getting it to run even on Win7 iirc, but installing wasn't too difficult. I don't think it's available on any game clients, so physical media might be the only way to go.

Great list! Nothing compares to Banished though in my opinion. Really wish the dev would have kept working on it... But still nice that it has so many mods. Sending settlers on expeditions would be an awesome feature for it.

I think Farthest Frontier is the one I'm looking forward to most. Besides that, I'll stick to games in the Settlers series.

Put another couple hundred hours into banished again this year. I’ve played some of these but none of them touch banished.

I will say surviving mars… I cried the first time I made the rain fall. But I also hadn’t slept in 20+ hrs. Be careful and stay hydrated lol
