As an orchestra teacher, in my conducting class in college, they emphasized that the conducting pattern needed to return to the same spot-- and gestures were within a range. Very similar to what you are talking about. 😊

I feel called out.

Be me, gesturing up high because I associate the head room with a better view for myself and thus it makes me feel better to raise the gestures.

Although its a good point to not confuse the audience or distract them with their entire body.
