Is A Monogram On A Dress Shirt Too Much?

I believe that a monogram on a dress shirt is a great way to customize it and make it uniquely yours. However, I do have an opinion on where the monogram should be placed.

Agreed on your points. I find them tacky and try hard in my opinion

Italian tailors typically put it on the left or right stomach by default.

I don't understand why the Monogram has to be anywhere on a Shirt. What is the Purpose?

I didn't know that the Korean boyband idol group were named after him.

I've been told that shirts were monogrammed in the past so that cleaning services did not mix up gentlemen's shirts since they all looked the same. A monogram was never used to show off your style, and therefore the only acceptable place for a monogram should be at the back/inside the collar where no one can see it.

It's very Italian for a monogram on the left stomach, around the lowest rib.

I prefer my monograms at the hem. Exactly as you said, not in your face and I know it's there. Sometimes I even use a tone-on-tone cotton for additional subtlety.

Quality and class comes from knowing, you don't have to show. People who know, know you are wearing something tailored or cut for you.

Why monogram a shirt? Scared of losing it? I’ve not had name tags since the army

This is so true, having a monogram on a shirt at the waist and tone on tone is inconspicuously tasteful. Contrast stitching and cuff monograms scream amateur in the tailoring world. It comes off as “look at me, look at me with my personal monogram” even if you got it done at the discount MTM warehouse.

Wow..first world problems. Didn't even know you can stitch on your monogram to your dress shirt...who even cares

The purpose of monogramming is of course identification. It helps the dry cleaner. Today it is somewhat of an affectation and anachronistic. But I like it because it’s old school when everyone laundered and there were vast numbers of shirts. Set yourself apart from others. That’s what style does.

A question - does a small X that appears when the jacket is buttoned show that the jacket is too tight? Or it is only the case when the X is excessive?

I have a few with light grey on sleeve. Its very subtle and does not stand out on white or blue shirts.

On the stomach is bizarre and the cuffs are a bit showy. Stick to the breast pocket and choose white or contrasting stitching depending on how visible you want it to be.

My mum write my intiials on the laundry label, with a sharpie, before I start any new job 😂

The very idea of monogramming is show-offy.
