Oh my gosh!  That swallow is an astonishingly beautiful bird! (The bluebird's not bad either! :)  The aerial acrobatics of the swallows are truly stunning too (even the "humble" barn swallows that live in my area).

I lived in Maine for almost 40 years and it was a yearly rivalry, that of the swallow and the bluebird. You guessed right. We had a box in front of a bay window and the wars were incessant for a week or so then the Bluebird usually won.

Requesting help from bird experts:  Red breasted bluebirds have been nesting annually in a bird house at my grandmother's for as long as I can remember. Well, at least 23 yrs. The house is now in desperate need of repair but the birds keep using it and we're afraid to take it down to repair or replace it because we don't want the birds to stop coming. any bird experts out there with an opinion on this matter? should we erect a new house near the old one and see if they'll move into the new one on their own? or would that possibly scare them away, too?
