I built a homemade clavinet!

This was a couple years in the making: I started it in high school, but then put it off until a few months ago when I had some time for it. Part of the inspiration to finish it was @SangerStudios's clavichord project. Ironically, this was originally intended to be a clavichord, but I later thought it would be simpler (and frankly, much cooler and more versatile) to make a clavinet instead. It's not perfect, but it's pretty good! I thought I'd top it off by playing some of my favorite clavinet parts in this video. (Also, please excuse the crappy playing and the fact that it's completely out of tune - I'm anything but a keyboardist and I was too lazy to properly tune it before recording this :P )

I have a bunch of build footage and photos from the whole process, but who knows if I'll ever get around to going through it all and putting it in a video. If there's enough demand, maybe I'll make it a higher priority.

Constructive criticism is always appreciated, and thanks for watching!

even if it’s a bit out of tune, the fact that you did this at all is an amazing accomplishment!! can’t even imagine how much time you must have taken to do something so cool

Seems like the tuning's a bit off, but it's still coming along really well!

I love this. I actually like that's it a little out of tune - it adds to the instrument's charm. So cool!

This is awesome!! I am lucky to have a D6 and I have always wondered how hard it would be to build one considering how simple the mechanics are and how fun they are to play. Please do share more build photos and video if you can. I would love to learn more about your build. Great job!

That's fantastic, nice work! Great sound, and I love the keys.

This is not a small feat. Imperfections aside, it's a lot to be able to replicate an instrument which requires knowledge of electronic AND mechanics. I love it 💙

YES! Please! Post your build log- been wanting to do this myself for ages but just couldn't figure out a process. Especially the stringing.

Love those keys and their stupidly simple return spring. :)

Nice! It's been years, and mine is still on paper. I have clavinet strings, and the design I want to use, but opted to work on steel guitars, and harpsichords, instead.

Very cool! I love the compact design and that you have the potential to access the tuners while playing (could be good for weird microtonal shenanigans maybe?)

sounds sorta like mr. clav had too much to drink with his other drink.

This clavinet of yours has such a lovely sound! Any interest in making a video showing how this works, and perhaps how you made it? I'd love to see how you put together the mechanism behind and under the keys! You mentioned that you had some footage of the building process, and I'm very interested in seeing it!

So is it like a sawtooth combined with a clavichord?

Is it a clavichord if it's acoustic like this and a clavinet if it's electronic? 🤔

... size amazes ! - Isn´t this instrument itself a modification of a clavichords theme, by the way ?
