NYC east village kid here. I've played Marty quite a few times, every time I pass through Washington Sq Park now, I can't help but venture near his area to see what he's up to. Fun guy. Lots of trash talk (off video, of course).

Marty seems like the nicest chess "hustler" I have seen in these types of videos. Here is to Eric, Marty and everybody else having a safe and awesome 2025!

Marty is so kind and has a fighting spirit, explains a lot when he mentioned watching your videos. Making a positive impact in the world 1 video at a time! Congratulations on further proving that Stockfish isn’t the last authority on how to play the game as humans still don’t have the brain capacity (yet) to play perfectly, but even then people like you would still exist. Showing top players that nothing is sacred and you can still play however you want to as long as you’re having fun (and winning a game or 2 while doing it).

Marty has the biggest heart in Washington Square on any given day (not just among the chess players). NYC royalty

I played Marty 3 years in a row. He always crushed me with the Philidor. In year 3, I beat him with a Caro Kann and it was a huge moment in my chess career.

One day, back in the mid-1980s, I was in the chess corner and there was a large commotion in the center of the park, by the fountain. They were filming the "Sun City" video. I saw all the celebrities of my life that day: Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne, Pat Benatar, Peter Gabriel, Reuben Blades, Joey Ramone, etc. Ringo Starr also played on that song, but I don't think he was there. Meanwhile, the chess players stayed playing chess and weren't bothered to walk 50 feet to see the show.

Don't be fooled by Eric's affable and easy-going demeanour ...he's the guy who took down a GM at a world championship tournament with the Stafford Gambit. A stone-cold killer. Warm greetings from Liverpool, by the way. 🙂

Man I always love the personalities of these players, and they are pretty darned good at chess (I mean, not IM level, but certainly not bad hehe)

My first time visiting New York was about 10 years ago. I was just exploring the city on foot, when I stumbled into Washington square Park. There were hundreds of people playing chess. I recognized the place from numerous TV shows and movies. Didn't take long before I found myself in a game with a hustler. I crushed him. One of my best memories of that trip.

Kind of the opposite of stockfish: the human side of chess.
