Galileo Galilei first observed Jupiter through his telescope in the year 1610. He found that the planet had four stars around it! Galileo eventually concluded that these stars were actually moons that were orbiting Jupiter, as he observed them moving around the planet over several days. These four moons are Jupiter's largest and they are now named after him. They are collectively known as the "Galilean Moons" and include Ganymede, Callisto, Io, and Europa.
