Meredith recognized both doctors responsible for her husband’s death immediately on sight. In one case several years had even passed.

Gosh. This is such a powerful speech. And it really encapsulates so much of Meredith’s growth and maturity as a character. She’s been on both sides of the coin. She’s done countless notifications. She’s taken away hope in a clinical trial patient’s family. She’s spoken to next of kin to victims of freak accidents. Partners, husbands, wives, parents, children, siblings, enemies, allies, friends; she’s notified them all, over the years. Hell, she even told her own father his wife had died, and got hit for it. And, she broke the news about Derek. There is no low to which she has not stooped to be the harbinger of death.


Yet, she’s also been the daughter. The sister. The widow. The friend. She’s seen, felt, and been told about the deaths of those closest to her over and over, far too many times for an ordinary person to bear. But she perseveres. She pulls through each and every time, and shows up to work to, on a good day, save lives, and on the worst, notify loved ones with all the kindness and compassion she would have wished for herself. Because *that* is who Meredith Grey is. And *that* is the legacy she wants to leave in the halls of the hospital that bears the names of two of her departed loved ones.

I always think about this scene. I recently lost my mother-in-law on December 1st, 2023. For my husband and I, we will forever remember that moment when she passed away. It was a long hard fought battle with cancer. Just less than 24 hours prior, she went into the hospital with pneumonia. Talked to her the night before. She was fine. Woke up the next morning and as we were getting ready to go to the hospital to visit her, we got the call from her hospice nurse that she passed away.

It knocked the wind out of both of us. We knew it was gonna be soon, but death is always sudden. That nurse will forever be burned into our memories. She was AMAZING!!!! However, in that moment, she had to deliver news that will hurt a person.
