This year's theme for Earth Science Week is "Exploring Energy." How do hurricanes get their energy? NASA hurricane scientist Dr. Jeff Halverson explains how hurricanes draw energy from the ocean surface. The video also provides an example of a classroom activity that allows students to map the change in sea surface temperature over time. This activity from My NASA Data uses actual data gathered from Hurricane Rita, which struck the Gulf of Mexico in September 2005.

Thank you NASA for truly working for the betterment of the world and for the benefit of all. Please keep on with your good work and soon our world will be a better place to live for everyone. If we finally get to know how these god damned hurricanes work, for sure we will be able then to prevent poverty and children from dying of hunger every few seconds in this world. Thank you again.

@selearemus The world doesn't revolve around you; just because your insignificant body is unaffected by hurricanes, doesn't mean we should stop researching them.

The fact is, hundreds of millions of people are affected by hurricanes, so researching them is very important. Even more important than stars millions of light years away which literally do not affect anyone and are simply observed out of fascination and desire for knowledge and explanations.
