Plytra - Lakonia. The sunken city of Ancient Asopos.
The city of the Ancient Asopos is located in the east side of the Laconian gulf which is situated in the southern Peloponnese.The current settlement is called Plitra or Plytra and according to historical references it identifies with the ancient town of Asopos.
Τhe sunken town and its remains can still be seen with an unaided eye in the sea along the shore. It is located in Plytra,in the municipality of Monemvasia , Laconia. Asopos used to be a member of Eleuthero - Laconians, it had a safe port and its own currency with the inscription ASOPITON. The town sank in 365 AD because of a big earthquake.
