To form the tertiary alcohol, we have to first form the acid derivative of the carboxylic acid, i.e acyl chloride, anhydrides, or ester and the do the reaction with grignard reagent in excess to form the tertiary alcohol

Thats grignard reagent. It replaces leaving grp with alkyl grp
