Scottish singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi has a knack for writing hit songs that always feature piano at the fore, and that’s why we love him here at HDpiano. Someone You Loved is Capaldi’s first big hit, released in late 2018, and it landed him at the top of the UK Singles Charts for seven straight weeks and became the best selling song of the year in the UK.

Capaldi says writing this song, and any song for that matter, wasn't easy. It often takes him weeks or months of "bashing [his] head against a brick wall for hours and hours on end to get one good melody.” Lucky for us, his head was able to withstand the force, and he left us with a beautiful song about parting ways with someone you loved, featuring a simple, but evocative piano part.

The song is based on a simple four-chord progression, and the piano part is based on simple three-note voicing of each chord. Instead of using a root position triad for each chord, the middle note (the 3rd) is brought up an octave to create a nice wide spread, which allows the harmony to breathe a bit. Then, the top two notes are alternated as eighth notes while the LH plays and holds the root as a bass line.

If you haven't watched any interviews I highly recommend it - this fella is a breath of fresh air in the world of pop music. Enjoy our exact transcription of the piano part here! -Dan

I'm going under and this time I fear there's no one to save me
This all or nothing really got a way of driving me crazy

I need somebody to heal
Somebody to know
Somebody to have
Somebody to hold
It's easy to say
But it's never the same
I guess I kinda liked the way you numbed all the pain

Now the day bleeds
Into nightfall
And you're not here
To get me through it all
I let my guard down
And then you pulled the rug
I was getting kinda used to being someone you loved

I'm going under and this time I fear there's no one to turn to
This all or nothing way of loving got me sleeping without you

Now, I need somebody to know
Somebody to heal
Somebody to have
Just to know how it feels
It's easy to say but it's never the same
I guess I kinda liked the way you helped me escape

Now the day bleeds
Into nightfall
And you're not here
To get me through it all
I let my guard down
And then you pulled the rug
I was getting kinda used to being someone you loved

And I tend to close my eyes when it hurts sometimes
I fall into your arms
I'll be safe in your sound til I come back around

For now the day bleeds
Into nightfall
And you're not here
To get me through it all
I let my guard down
And then you pulled the rug
I was getting kinda used to being someone you loved

But now the day bleeds
Into nightfall
And you're not here
To get me through it all
I let my guard down
And then you pulled the rug
I was getting kinda used to being someone you loved

I let my guard down
And then you pulled the rug
I was getting kinda used to being someone you loved

Just wanted to comment and say this is a very simple song to learn and not something that I would like to learn either, however my comment is just to say that I watched your video and was suprised because your way of teaching piano is incredible you explain and show people how to play the piano with ease so great work its nice to see teachers that have that passion to really pass on the knowledge in the depth that you do keep it up.

Pachelbels Canon in D is the grandaddy of modern pop ballads. So many pop songs that did well on charts are derivatives of those four chords. There's even a Spotify list of "Songs based on Pachelbel's Canon in D major"
