We had a Rhodesian Ridgeback mix we named Spooker because he was very easily scared by people (we think he was abused previously, and because he was a drop-off on our road we had no idea), but he was a sweetheart. He was super strong and could clear our 5' fence even into his old age. It was incredible to see this 14-year-old dog still pull adults around by his leash and jump fences like that.

We grew up with a gorgeous Rhodesian Ridgeback named Brutus, in South Africa. Loved him to bits. He seemed to understand everything my parents said. When we were very young he was involved in a nasty fight with neighbourhood dogs, and the Council told my dad to get rid of him. We are Jewish and could not disobey in the 1940s, so my dad took him to a farm 50 km away. They were delighted to have him. We were very sad indeed. Three weeks later, who should, bedraggled, walk in at our back gate? Brutus!! He had walked all the way home. He remained with us, loyal, gentle, funny, impatient for walks, loving ice cream, until the end.

My girl lived to 13 years old before passing from cancer. She was an amazing, loving, yet fiercely protective dog.

I had a friend whose grandmother saved a ridgeless Ridgeback from euthanasia. They were literally going to kill her because she was a purebred with no ridge. She was very sweet and well behaved, some dog breeders are truly awful.

We had a Rhodesian Ridgeback growing up, he was a mix, so he didn't actually have the ridge, and he was amazing. He was super smart, the smartest dog I've ever seen (at least toddler level), and put up with three babies all pulling on his ears and tail. He even foiled a robbery. 10/10 would recommend.

These are the best bed stealing dogs I've met. Mine was lost to cancer shortly before his 12 BD. We had a kitty when he was rescued and he did't think he ever got bigger than the cat, despite being 75 lb. He was my first and forever heart dog. He is guarding my daughter until I join them.

My gran grew up in Africa and she was never allowed to leave the house without her Rhodesian Ridgeback though apparently he protected her more from snakes than anything else

I had a RIdgeback for 15 years. She was too smart for anyone's good. I really miss her, especially when I need to make the bed. She loved nothing better than running the cats out of the room.

My sister in law had a RR. Sweetest guy ever. His ridge was wonky too but from a cancerous growth. He was 12 when he passed. Wonderful breed.

i had a family ridgeback named ‘riffraff’ (riff for short) that was named as such for having white fur thats supposed to be on their toes up to his knee or so, he was sold to us really cheap. he was beautiful and called ‘princess ninni’ for short as he was very stupid, didnt like wet grass with a passion, drank for five minutes straight and peed just as long, but the sweetest thing ever and only ever wanted love. his mom actually won many dog shows and is on the cover of a book, so other than his big sock, he was STUNNING. we ended up having to put him down on my birthday a few years back. we were all super sad but i would give him as many of my birthdays as he would need. i miss you riff, even if you werent the brightest, your heart shined bigger than anything else in this world ❤️❤️❤️

"Can become domineering" somebody tell my Max that because he is the sweetest and most laid back boy in the world. He's also a scardy cat and would run away from lions hahaha he does love his cuddles and kisses though

My family has had a deep love for this breed. They are very good with children and they very social. Much happier when you have more than one of them.

My first dog was a Ridgeback I had her from the time I was 8 till 23, the best dog you could ever ask for when I was little and wanted to play or wrestle she loved it and as she got older she would have that spark of energy left sometimes and still wanna play all the way up till 15yrs

Not a day goes by that we don't say our ridgeback is truly the best dog ever. Listens so well and he throws his paw up to me when he sees the nail clippers. Massive vocabulary memory and acts upon hand signals.

I've got a Rhodesian ridgeback/boxer mix and he's hands down the sweetest boy. 100 pounds of pure muscle, fiercely protective and the gentlest giant I've ever had. We got 2 more rescue pups and even though he's getting old he still runs around and plays with them, even when they're full of puppy energy. Amazing dog breed and I love him to death.

I had a Rhodesian Ridgeback named Lucy. Lucy was afraid of shopping carts, people, cars, the woods, her own shadow!
