VOCES8: 'Hope is the Thing with Feathers' by Christopher Tin

Text by Emily Dickinson

“Hope” is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul -
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all -

And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard -
And sore must be the storm -
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm -

I’ve heard it in the chillest land -
And on the strangest Sea -
Yet - never - in Extremity,
It asked a crumb - of me.

I buried my dear little parrot Esperanza yesterday. This magnificent recording soothes my broken heart. She perches inside my soul.

As always, heavenly. No vibrato, just pure notes. You’ve squeezed more out of this music than I could have believed possible.

Tin writes beautifully. The whole work is gorgeous. Towards the end the harmonies keep me in constant suspense and engagement.
Dickinson's poetry, Tin's music, and VOCES8's interpretation. Superb. Deeply moving. Art at its highest.

Even over YouTube, you all make me press my hand to my heart, because FEELINGS. See you again the next time you're in Baltimore.

Carl Hanser, München, 2015, S. 263), besonders in Strophe 1:

"Die 'Hoffnung' ist ein Federding
Das in der Seele hockt
Und Lieder ohne Worte singt
Sich niemals unterbricht."

Yet again: stunning and beautiful. A tribute to Emily Dickinson on this All Saints' Day; and, for Christopher Tin's sensitive treatment of the text, only gratefulness and applause.
