What are the planets outside our solar system like? Astrophysicist and TED Fellow Jessie Christiansen has helped find thousands of them (and counting), and the variety is more wonderful and wild than you might imagine. She shares details on the trends emerging from the data -- including the intriguing possibility of "super-Earths" -- and what the discovery of exoplanets means for existential questions like: Where do we come from, and how did we get here?

👋👋👋👋I can only say, there is more to come, and I'm happy for it even if I don't live to see it. My hope is that the anti-science establishment, (to whom science is their greatest threat), doesn't derail your efforts.

10's of billions of planets in the Milky Way?? There's no way we're the only ones out there.

Congrats to the PI of the Kepler mission. I’m kinda tired of all this faux excitement about careers and less focus on the science and understanding of the results.

1:10 This is one of the ways you can detect an exoplanet, called the transit spectroscopy method.
4:00 Likely talking about Hot Jupiters, how they're orbiting so close to their start that they are slowly being "eaten away"
4:04 Orbital resonance, we can see that in our own solar system through Jupiter's Galilean moons
5:40 The James Webb Space Telescope has already taken pictures of an exoplanet!

Super interesting talk on exo-planets! It's definitely an important topic. It's cool to think she could be the "photographer" for the first real picture of an earth-like exo planet. 📷

suspected exo planets - the process she is using just identifies candidates it is not confirmation. It is great and a necessary step and excited, but vastly over stated here.

‘Be the person who breaks the cycle. If you were judged, choose understanding. If you were rejected, choose acceptance. If you were shamed, choose compassion. Be the person you needed when you were hurting, not the person who hurt you. Vow to be better than what broke you—to heal instead of becoming bitter so you can act from your heart, not your pain’

It’s incredible. 5000 in our limited view suggests they’re everywhere. It’s absurd that life developed here as it did if there’s no natural law that pushes it to happen.
