The transition to IPv6 is inevitable. As the amount of users on the internet continues to grow, and continues to grow exponentially, we are simply running out of IPv4.

Owen Delong, IPv6 Evangelist at Hurricane Electric, offered to stop by SF Java and tell us what the future has in store for us. This talk is not just for the Java developer, but is a valuable resource for all developers who touch the network stack.

That article says 3.72 billion, which is far from the 3.2 billion mentioned in the talk. And the article actually got a too high number due to a mistake in their calculation. That article says 128 - 3 = 126.

He said there are 3.2 billion unicast addresses in IPv4. My calculations says 3.7 billion. Which 0.5 billion could I have missed?

In case anybody else find the initial presentation to be a bit boring, it only lasts about 20 minutes and is followed by an interesting Q&A session.

Cisco seems to have a good breakdown with the math: ciscopress . Pretty nice read actually.

Nice video but the cheesy intro music gave me a headache.
