Nope they call it the Death Star to spread fear across the galaxy as the empire literally ruled through fear of being obliterated, hence the star killer base etc.

To inspire fear in any planets that might attempt to join the Rebellion, the "Death Star" monacre would have been more menacing and intimidating. Calling it the "Peace Protector" wouldn't inspire the same fear.

If it helps any Grand Moph Tarkin called it a "battle station" Then again he wasn't exactly projecting friendly and kindness vibes when he said that the imperial governors would be ruling by fear "of this battle station."

In that meeting on the DeathStar, Grand Moff Tarkin says that the Emperor has disolved the senate. Emperor Palpatine is done hiding his true colors. Its time to ruie with an iron fist like a Sith Lord should.

Still, could be a widespread nickname to the point that the empire use it habitually from hearing rebels natter on about it before placing a rifle hole in their skull

Nah it makes sense, nazis used terms like “stormtrooper” and “dreadnought “. So if they were a company they wouldn’t use the term Death Star but if they were a military force they might.

In reality it would probably be called Battlestation - 01 or some other numerical designation.

Maybe they just knew that that’s what the rebels called it and so that’s the name they searched for when looking through the files for the plans

Well the plans the rebels stole had to have a name on them for what was being built.

I mean it is not like they would use "Giant planet destroying space station", or ""Space station that is the size of a small moon and can destroy an entire planet".

Even "Space station that is really really big and destroy an entire planet", just does not seem as fearsome as "Death Star".
