I think they say the thumb has a higher pulse, e.g. when checking a pulse on a wrist the Thumb should no be near the pulse line in the wrist or the incorrect pulse may be detected

there's not much more in the ones doctors use. The docs ones read O2 levels which can be done easily as it's done by measuring the amount of light absorbed.
