I have the same problem with the compass, it sucks. I had to mount the cellphone on the nose of the car.
In my car I only use a bluetooth module, all the sensor and gps data comes from a cellphone that is attached to the car.
I payed the same price as I would for a compass + gps module and I get to use the cellphone if I need it xD
