Unbelievable hymn. The lyrics are heavenly and the old Irish tune 'Slane' is simply magnificent.

A dear friend is terminally ill with bone cancer, and the brass band that she and I play in recently played this for her at a concert, which we recorded for her so that she can watch it in the hospice. I hope it will give her some peace as she faces the end of her life.

I don't really know why but this hymn came into my mind this evening thinking back to my time in the choir at St John's Church in Ipswich back in the early 1970s. I remember this as an evening hymn and the organist used to reduce the sound as the last line was sung which seemed so fitting. I had to find it and the, lyics but I was completely unprepared for the moving performance here. I have tears rolling down my face at the beauty of the melody and especially the words, so full of meaning. Thank you so much for this wonderful post.

I hope Jan (Joyce) An-Struther found tranquil peace after her terrible depression and early demise in 1953 R.I.P...

Such a lovely hymn and Slane certainly does it justice.

Well done.

thank you for this. Whilst I'm not religious myself, I sing this song more for my Grandad who died not too long ago. At his funeral I was able to maintain my composure...till we got to this hymn, his favourite. It unlocked all the pain, gratefulness and love I had for him and like water my tears started to flow. It always makes me thankful for his life, his love and his soul, so thank you. And to you, stranger of the internet...tell those who you love that you love them tonight. Love is one of the greatest gifts we humans have, to share and receive 🧡

Lord of All Hopefulness
1. Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy,
Whose trust, ever child-like, no cares can destroy,
Be there at our waking, and give us, we pray,
Your bliss in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day.

2. Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith,
Whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe,
Be there at our labors, and give us, we pray,
Your strength in our hearts, Lord, at the noon of the day.

3. Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace,
Your hands swift to welcome, your arms to embrace,
Be there at our homing, and give us, we pray,
Your love in our hearts, Lord, at the eve of the day.

4. Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm,
Whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm,
Be there at our sleeping, and give us, we pray,
Your peace in our hearts, Lord, at the end of the day.
