Apple today announced major changes to its app ecosystem in the European Union, implementing updates that will allow iPhone and iPad users to download and install apps outside of the App Store through alternative app marketplaces.

There are other changes coming as well. Users in the European Union will have an option to choose a default browser after updating to iOS 17.4, with Apple providing a list of the most downloaded browsers.

‌App Store‌ rules around iCloud gaming are being updated globally to make it easier for users to download and enjoy games.

Definitely the bigger one for me the game streaming change. It will be interesting to see how quickly native apps will come out.

Highlighting EU in the video title would help a lot 😃

One big question about browsers on iOS - will they be able to have their own rendering engines? That’s been a big limitation of iOS browsers, they all use the iOS-supplied WebKit rendering engine. So Firefox for iOS isn’t really using the Firefox Gecko rendering engine. Will this update allow the Firefox for iOS to use Gecko?

To those thinking apple is letting anyone easily add a 3rd party app it's not, you are still holded by apple. The conditions are in a such a way that no small bussiness would try going the alternative way.
Under the App Store's new fee structure for Europe, if you make $10 million in sales, Apple's cut is $6.2 million annually.
Assuming you have no operating costs or salaries, your take home amount:
$2 million after tax—or 20% of your sales

Can you make an app that allows ssn and id to be digital instead of in person? Like a debit card is digital why can ssn or id

This video fails to mention of the €1, 000, 000 letter of credit required to establish an App Marketplace, as well as the absurd €0.50 charge for every install past 1 Million that gets applied on ANY app marketplace, should a developer choose to utilise third party marketplaces.

If you're gonna report the "good" news, you need to acknowledge the bad news too

How will Apple know that you are in the European Union? By the device IP address or from the setup screen when you first turn on the device after unboxing or something else altogether? Basically I would prefer not to move to Europe just to get some of these features when they are released.

The app security thing is like Mac with a mojor difference Mac does the auto/security thing but your free to ignore the warnings or turn off the restriction. You can’t on iOS

I wonder if there will be work arounds to get it work outside the EU. I mean I know there is ways to download apps that aren’t in your country so many that could work but I feel like Apple would try to make it harder. If anyone has ideas share them.

Well, this is a completely logical business move. The US dictatorship is cutting off foreign markets, and this way it will be possible to bypass sanctions and continue to trade unofficially.
