Maui took that first hit from Taka on his hook, so I think that would have protected him from that full force of the hit, and he survived 1, 000 years on a small atoll with no obvious food or water resources, so yes, he was immoral.
The Heart of Tafiti may have been able to protect whomever held it, but I think that there would have been a limit to what it could do, and Moana could have lost it at any time, so she was in very real danger.
