Today on the first episode of Lifting The Hood we take a look at the Thomsen Motorsports FVT05 Formula Vee. This ground up single seater was designed and built by Simon, and has already enjoyed surprising levels of success even though it is barely out of the testing phase.

Thanks to Simon for bringing his car along and opening it up for us! I'm looking at potentially making a series of "Lifting the Hood", let me know if you would like to see it!

Would love to see more 'Lifting the Hood' videos, Formula SAE, time attack cars, hillclimb racers, diffrent open wheelers and landspeed racers are just a few cars that come to mind...

luv the content. You bring out the complexities in things us gearheads think we already understand as basic. in light of that, please make a short video about why unsprung mass is important and how big of a difference 10Kg of unsrpung mass would compare to an additional 10Kg of sprung mass.
also one about fitting the widest tries you can on a track day style car.

Interesting to compare formula vee specs between SCCA and Australian. I drove an Adams Aero in the 90s. We get to delete the cooling fan, you get to delete the stock front shock location. Good work, well done!

I'm currently building one of these from scratch much like yourself. I'm not building it for FV though, rather for FRCCA Formula S. It still has the vw air cooled engine but it's turbocharged and has front and rear wings as well as wider tires.

I think there was at least another 5 or 6 min of good info in this video for someone who really wanted to.

Is that a 1600 beetle motor? I'd like to build a Formula Vee but am still trying trying to understand the construction basics. I presume you had to invert the flywheel and gearbox, and use an adaptor plate?

If the engine and transmission are rotated 180 degrees how do you get the wheels to turn in the correct direction fornthe forward gears.
