One dead after car falls from parking deck at Birmingham hospital

One person is dead after a car fell from a parking deck at Grandview Medical Center on Highway 280, Birmingham Fire and Rescue confirmed Thursday.

Officials said the incident happened around 8:30 a.m. at the hospital. A vehicle fell from the fourth level of the parking deck and landed on its roof at street level.

This is horrific. Somebody just on their way to their parking spot at work one min and gone the next. 😮😞 It takes a good bit of force to snap all of those steel cables like that.

She had to have mistakenly hit gas instead of brake. So sad. These elderly people need someone with them driving to the doctor. This is a tragedy and it happens so often. God bless her.

Gravity happened. Obviously those cables used as "guard rails" don't do their job in preventing vehicles from going over the edge of the building.

Yesterday morning, my husband and I pulled in the hospital parking deck at Grandview. I specifically told my husband, not park in one of the spaces where there is nothing but cables on the edge. They make me feel unsafe. He told me those cables were strong and would stop a car. I told him it would only be a matter of time before a vehicle went over the edge. Little did I know yesterday that this horrible incident would be happening in the employee parking deck as I was expressing my fears.

My heart goes out to the young womans family and friends. May they find peace and comfort in their time of great sorrow.
