I realized a few years ago that I enjoy reading about philosophy more than I enjoy reading the actual philosophy. I think it was Hegel who broke me. 😅 That being said, Symposium is an easy read. And coincidentally, I have been considering making the history of philosophy one of my focal points for next year’s Historathon.

Being trained in philosophy ensures a far greater degree of understanding and enjoyment in the subject. Books such as Being & Nothingness by Jean-Paul Sartre are double Dutch to any without the relevant guidance.
But, an understanding of this undervalued discipline can be truly life changing.

Medieval philosophy has far more to offer than most are aware, particularly if you are interested in logic, semantics, and ontology

Really cool idea :) I'm planning on getting together a list of classic non fiction text across a few different genres including philosophy to finally tick off some of these big names. My degree was philosophy but hilariously I didn't end up reading many of the big texts - at undergraduate level it was more individual chapters from these kinds of books or more papers/journals. So despite my degree, I feel like I'm missed out on so many of these big classic books. Totally agree with you about Plato, never really bothered by him. Only read the Meno and found it so dull! Russell and Hume were always my preferred reading, though I'd love to check out more of Philosophy of Science or some of the classic ethical texts. Great idea adding in secondary sources! I find historical context so helpful as well. My degree so often took things out of their historical context and we didn't get a sense of when these ideas were popular or what order they came in, whereas so much of philosophical thought is about what happened before/after and also whats happening in the world at the time.

As someone who is a layperson and has no formal education in philosophy I can relate to you. I am always reading it but it's also work. Even though I love it, it takes willpower to sit down with those books sometimes. I think for curious people like us, its the ultimate genre.

We've talked in the historathon server a little about it but I would be down to group or buddy read with you every now and then.

I love doing concept/topic projects. I have imagined attempting philosophy one day so I will be happy to get your thoughts on which books are the most helpful, understandable, and palatable. I hope you have a positive experience and enjoy!

The presocratics semed to focus much more on natural philosophy. That might be why they clicked with you. I've been wanting to take a closer look at Epicurus and Lucretius. That might be material you would enjoy as well.

But anyway, it sounds like a cool reading project. I'm a philosophy amateur at best, but I'd be glad to join in on any Discord groups, read alongs, or anything like that. Have a nice weekend!

I hope you do a gardening series! We are in the process of putting up a 14 feet wide by 30 feet long greenhouse. I would appreciate any help I could get! The philosophy series sounds great

Descartes's Meditations are pretty straight forward and rewarding to read.

This is one of those areas I have very little feel for in books or even book tubers who read it much, so could be interesting to see what you find. I am sure with your appreciation for the Very Short Introduction collection, you must have some gold ones there. I really enjoyed the one on Reality which is definitely science and philosophy.
You might also enjoy How to Be Perfect by Michael Schur more as a pop philosophy book thats very simple/accessible and enjoyalbe, to more get ideas of what areas you want to dive deeper on most.

That sounds pretty cool that you're doing this. And that's funny you mentioned Bertrand Russell. I was going to say I haven't read very many philosophy books, but I really like him. I remember The Cynic Philosophers: from Diogenes to Julian being good. And I think you may have been the person who mentioned the Story of Philosophy by Durant. I haven't gotten into that yet, but I've heard good things. Oh, one more I liked was Stoic Classics Collection. It has stuff grom Aurelius, Epictetus and Seneca. But yeah, if you're going to be doing some philosophy videos, I'd love to see them and hear your thoughts so I can get some ideas.

My son double majored in college psychology and philosophy. So I know he would be down for this. I was still holding out hope that you were going to do a garden series, but I now see that you weren't kidding and I have to come with grips with reality. 😢 Lol 😂

Not “getting” philosophical thought is part of the process—embrace it. Just beware of the other side of the philosophical thought coin; namely, thinking you’ve got it all figured out.

I went through "the Republic" as part of another reading project this year. I gotta say that while it was an interesting experiment I left it wanting to scream as it just felt so pretentious like...instead of just being an argument it was a 'look how more enlightened I am from all you peons." I only had one philosophy class in college. I did well, but it was a mixed bag experience. so I can't say I'm opposed to ever reading more. I just think I'm simply not insightful enough, if I'm being honest, to do any truly deep works. Smaller bits. Otherwise I just get frustrated, lost, or angry. Contrary to what I just said, I'm actually curious to see where this goes and will absolutely take your opinions into consideration if I try to dip my feet in again
