According to Norse mythology, Odin sought to gain knowledge and wisdom about the world and the universe. To achieve this, he went to Mímir, a wise being who guarded a well of wisdom located beneath the roots of Yggdrasil, the World Tree. Odin asked Mímir for a drink from the well to gain its wisdom, but Mímir demanded a significant price in exchange.
Mímir required Odin to sacrifice one of his eyes, and drop it into the well so that all that stare into its waters will see Odin’s sacrifice.
Odin gouged out his right eye and threw it into the well, where it sank into the depths. In return for this sacrifice, Mímir allowed Odin to drink from the well and gain incredible knowledge and wisdom.
Odin's sacrifice of his eye represents the theme of self-sacrifice for greater knowledge and power, which is a recurring motif in Norse mythology.

Odin gave his eye for knowledge, in a way it gave Odin more insight.
