Fwd is better, cheaper then awd, lower weight, better range, good in rain occasionally snow. If your not in the snow belt (I’m not, thank goodness), fwd is better.

Perfect SUV for a Prius Prime owner going full electric. Toyota will sell lots of these thanks to price and solid Toyota quality. Yes quirky but its fine!

Can't wait to see the charging curve of the fwd model. Just wondering how it compares to the awd.

I’ve had a RAV4 EV 2013 for six years and it’s front wheel drive as well. Although the entire powertrain was built by Tesla I had no issue with front wheel drive on this vehicle.

It’s time…

Many have complained about the dearth of “affordable” EVs. Yet, all the car reviews I read and watch compare any and all EVs to the likes of Tesla Model S, Porsche, MB, BMW, et al…

Endless comparisons of HP, 0-60 times, premium materials, etc… all end up putting down any kind of affordable EV because they don’t live up to Roadster standards.

Time to let that mentality go. It’s not doing the widespread adoption of EVs any good. Anyone with any sense is already well aware of the top tier brands and models. That info is out there.

Let’s encourage manufacturers to produce economy models - affordable, durable, reliable. Yes, they won’t have all the gee whiz top notch gizmos. That’s not the MO of an affordable vehicle.

Can we get some real world reviews of real world models? Those reviews don’t have to insincerely hype bad products, but they don’t have to knock them down simply because they’re more affordable, either.

Price: Begins at $42, 000. The higher Limited trim starts at $46, 700.
Acceleration: 0-60-mph in 7.1 seconds with front drive and 6.5 with all-wheel drive.

Has this guy lived in a snowy climate? AWD is a price hike. FWD is cheaper and still good in the snow.

I think you're putting far too much emphasis on the FWD. It's likely saving Toyota assembly time and reducing costs which can translate to more competitive pricing; which will be critical in the coming years if they have to drop prices. It's likely saving space in the rear. Plus it's typically far better in winter scenarios without needing to buy a set of winter tires.

The charge plug... I mean are we really complaining about having to push a second tab to open the DCFC plug? Bit surprised you didn't mention the sunshade on the moonroof as not all cars have one. Nor did you show the trunk space. You pointed out the lack of HVAC controls in the rear, which at this price point is expected. Definitely agree on the complaints about the gloss black and the phone charger situation. but in terms of data connection, does this have wireless? Android Auto / Apple Carplay?

"Not Tesla acceleration"... Yeah well the model Y starts at $63, 000, and this is about $34.5k after tax credit ... so there is that. Lol... like ... why would one even think to compare acceleration on these two vehicles? You could buy two of these for the price of the entry level model Y.

Doesn't this vehicle have good ground clearance as well, making it good for off road scenarios... say to get to a camp site? No mention of road noise or road feel at all in this review.

People in the market for this car will buy it as a reliable all purpose appliance to get them from point A to point B using its large size and utility.

No one is buying this car as a sport car to floor around corners with traction control off... or floor it in general. This is why a good mix of reviewers is always a good thing. Where's the "grandma reviews cars" channel with a person who mostly cares about how quiet and smooth the car drives, how easy it is to get in, visibility, how easy it is to operate and find everything they're looking for. IMO, concentrating reviews so heavily on performance may be great for people who want a performance car, but it does very little for your every day driver. If performance is being prioritized, then why review this car at all?

Now if you said something like "The FWD takes away from the turning circle"... then that would be a good complaint for every day driving.

bz4x FWD v id4 RWD in snow? (or bz2f v id2 as I call them). I wonder if bz may have advantages like fwd and ground clearance and turning radius

FWD means weight savings of ca 100 kg (cables and cooling) and more free space for rear passenger row and boot compared to RWD. Most likely better in snow also.

The FWD seems less disappointing than the AWD. I feel this is going to end up being the seller, especially when people realize it's paradoxically a better road tripper than the AWD car

Not everyone is an enthusiast. Front wheel drive makes more sense in areas with mild winters.

Really nice review. Thanks! I look forward to your other tests on this and the AWD bZ4X. I have the Subaru Solterra on order.

In snowy climate with half frosen slush strings, front or four wheel drive is the only option, if you dont want to die, so, I dispute your anti frontwheel drive stance.
Do you get the Renault Megane-E in the US? That one will be a hugh seller over here I guess.
Cheers fron Sweden, , 🍻😎👍‍‍👍‍‍

Compare ID.4 vs BZ4X Also passenger space between the two. Also charging curve.

I prefer FWD, makes me feel more in control when steering... also, hope to see your standard 70mph range test with FWD to compare with Kia/Hyundai numbers...

I assume the camera off center in the front would be due to the hood latch mechanism but no idea why it's that way in the back.

It seemed like you were getting a lot of cabin noise. Any reason for that? Was it just that particular recording or is the cabin really that noisy?
