The male lion at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park decided to give a speech!

Wow this is a rare type of lion roar, I usually hear multiple levels of growling along with huffing and puffing, but this lion kept his mouth wide open and carried a loud, lengthy, heavy growl and roar, just like how lions are perceived in those MGM movie opening scenes...very impressive! Thanks for sharing. Such a majestic beautiful king!

I have been about 3 feet away from a great lion like this one behind bars - I remember my chest vibrating as he growled at me.

What an impressive display! Big healthy male lion showing what he's got! *cheers and applause* Male lion calls like that are very far-reaching. They can be heard up to 5 or even 6 miles away! The call is saying "This area is mine! Any other male lions around here better get away unless you wanna tangle with ME!"

Amateur Zoologist and owner of 12 cats here. This is typical behavior of a cat that's been abused. As a Redditor it's my duty to protect the world, we are intellectuals after all, and I've contacted my local police department regarding the issue. My husband and I were annual passport holders when we lived in San Diego. The male lion kept roaring like this on a visit we took 4 years ago. The zoo keeper said his mate was going into labor and they had to take her away. I wonder if that's the case here.
