VIDEO TRANSCRIPT:

Your first concern may be - is it safe to go back?

Well, employers have a duty of care to their employees, to not put them in harm’s way, so they will have done a risk assessment to ensure your safety.

A risk assessment requires your employer to look at the hazards you may face and make sure controls are put in place to bring any risk of harm to as low a level as possible. At the moment, the additional hazard (on top of your ‘normal’ workplace hazards) is, of course, the spread of the Coronavirus; and in most workplaces this will require your employer to put extra measures in place to keep you safe. There's likely to be a couple of new policies or procedures in place, which will explain what both you and your employer have to do.

For example, there may be a Social Distancing Policy, requiring you to maintain a safe distance from everyone else - this means colleagues, customers, clients, visitors, patients, students – in fact, anyone who comes into your workplace. You may have to follow safe walking routes. There may be additional hygiene procedures, such as the use of hand sanitisers; and your employer may require you to use protective clothing, or equipment, such as face masks or gloves. Your employer may also have a policy about travel to work at this time.

The measures each organisation takes will differ, but it’s so important that you know what measures your organisation has in place, and that you follow them. It’s not just your own health and safety that are at stake, but the health and safety of everyone you come across, both at work, at home and anywhere in between!
