I grew up at played at Lake Lanier constantly, my brother got violently ill once from accidentally swallowing some of the lake water. Its also where my family held my cousins funeral last year. I didn't grow up hearing scary stories or anything of the sort growing up about it, we were simply told not to swim out too far, don't eat anything you catch, and that theres a city down there.

I've lived in Georgia my entire life, I'm 32, and have been going to Lanier consistently since my teens. There are good years where no one passes, and bad years where multiple will. I swear you can FEEL when it's going to be a bad year, it's like there's a heavy darkness over the lake, with a feeling of being watched. Call me crazy, but on those years I tend to keep my happy ass on the shore and docks. It's the only lake I've ever been on that I've felt actual fear on, and I've been on plenty. I've also known a few folks that have died while on the lake, one did while on the docks themselves. They didn't find him until a week or so later, under the very docks he went missing on.

A family friend lost her husband in Lake lineer during 4th of July which also happened to be his birthday. I've never been to the lake but many claim it to have a presence of distrust and it seems almost vengeful. So now with me knowing the history of the lake, it makes sense.

My parents moved to Murrayville (north end of Lake Lanier) when I was a teen in the mid-80s. The water is surprisingly cold, even when the air temp has been cresting 100 for weeks. It isn’t unusual to feel something wrap around your ankle while swimming. You tell yourself it’s just milfoil or another water weed - but it sure does feel like cold fingers.

During the epic drought in the early 2000s, we found animal skulls, antique bicycles and a couple of 1950s cars on the lake bed in the back yard.

I have been swimming a lot since I was really young and people so often underestimate the danger of swimming, as well as underestimating how exhausting it is, like never go swimming across the middle of a lake unless you know you can handle the distance or it's shallow enough that you can stand on the ground

Grew up in Georgia, and often went to lake lanier. I knew about some of the dangers on lake Lanier. There is basically a town at the bottom. I heard of people snagging fishing tackle on buildings. There are also strong currents in parts of it.

As a person who grew up right on the lake and just up the street from the dam I can confirm that people die and get hurt all the time. During my graduation a girl had to be in a wheelchair because a drunk boater crashed into their boat and had the propeller slice her leg open. Even recently there were 2 boat fires.

"Aquatic" horror is always fascinating and I would have to say you did a fine job presenting the story of this lake. Would definitely love to see more content of this nature in the future :D

My home is ten minutes away from Lake Lanier. The history of the people in Oscarville 'displaced' to make the lake is just horrific. I always attributed the deaths to the buildings and trees left behind, creating a hazard to anyone that falls into the lake. It sucks that such a crappy job was done in preping the land, after stealing it, to create the lake. Maybe it is the price we pay...

My late father told me he saw a woman in a prom dress with no hands and red eyes walking across that bridge one night. I remember hearing that if you go alone she ends up in your driver's seat. Said thing happened to his friend and he jumped out of his car screaming. With my dad, he worked at a conveyor belt company and was coming back from some work convention with a co-worker. His co-worker was telling him this story while they were driving over it actually.

You can all believe me or not, I lived in Georgia the majority of my life. The place just *feels* haunted.

The silty mud in parts of Lanier feels different than other lakes, the decomposing plant matter creates gas pockets and when you disturb them it sucks you in like a mini sink hole... also there are some pretty big catfish in there.

I've been to the lake many times before, it's definitely interesting. Me and my friend have actually found an Army Corps of Engineers sign near the shore. I've heard stories of people nearly drowning and feeling as if something was trying to pull them under.

Thank you. I lived on Lake Lanier for years, swam and boated, we knew about potential dangers beneath the surface. One thing many of the old timers used to tell us was when they flooded the area and old homes were flooded, they never filled in old wells and because of that it has left what they described as suck holes. They believe many people get caught up in the suck holes. It is also said there are monster catfish that can actually eat humans. If someone gets caught under old Debree I guess I can see that happening. People should also be aware when swimming that there are many many Cotton mouth and Water moccasin snakes just under the surface and by the banks. Great story. My spouse was born and raised in the area and said he had always heard stories of the Lady of the Lake.

I once swam across a bay with my girlfriend only to realize about 2/3 that I was no longer able to swim. My girlfriend was fine thankfully, but I was straight up starting to panic a little. I ended up just turning on my back and slowly moving to shore. I made it but that was actually kind of scary, and definitely a learning experience. Shoutout to the paddle borders who stared at me struggling without offering to help lol.

I live on Lake Lanier. There's some spooky sh!t going on around here. And I didn't believe in any of that type of sh!t before I lived up here. And at first I thought I was going crazy until my parents and other guests started experiencing the same things. It's crazy

You know it’s bad when you live 16 hours away from a place and multiple people tell you to avoid it still.
