The Complicated Relationship Between Greece and Germany

Germany was very quick to introduce austerity measures for the Greek people but now that their economy is crashing they are forcing all of Europe to spend 800B in military spending.

I'm german and i'm living in a region with one of the biggest greek diaspora in the world, the region of Stuttgart. We have greek restaurants, greek shops, culture clubs and we even have pontic greeks here.
I travel to Greece since i am a young boy, i know the country and culture well. I love Greece and its people.
Greeks are welcome here in Germany.

I have nothing to do with the german government.
I don't support Turkey, the greek, armenian and assyrian genocide, the occupation of ww2.
The alliance with the muslim ottomans was a bad mistake in the history of Germany.
Cyprus is Greek.

I hate the things my country did to Greece.

Well also germany demanded greece to pay it's depts when germany itself didn't pay the war reparations, nor has returned the antiqueties they stole during the occupation, not even today

Saint Paisios once said that the EU wouldn't work out in the end, because "the blood is still warm". My grand mother, who remembers very well the German occupation on Crete, and saw members of our family killed and people she knew, being executed, she has great mistrust against Germans, and you can't blame her. The fact that during the economic crisis, German media would slander against the Greek people, calling them lazy and ultimately making those hard times even harder for them, this is not something you forget easily.

German economy is not doing very well recently. Lol. Maybe the Germans should work harder!

In Germany during the Greek economic crisis, there was an exaggerated propaganda about the Greeks being lazy. Also, Merkel and Schäuble were aggressive and punitive towards Greece to an inhumane degree.

Germans are real Protestants. They live to work and stock money . They don’t even tip at restaurants
On the other hand Greeks work to live and they enjoy living and help each other especially the persecuted ones
Totally different aspect of life

My family owns a restaurant and over the years we have had lots of Germans refusing to pay with the excuse that Greece owes money to Germany. Not that all Germans think that way but its something we cant forget.

Germany is also historically allies with Turkey. The idea of killing Greeks and Armenia and others not turks population was German idea

I can still hear my mother recounting how the Germans rounded up the village men in the square, getting ready to execute them in retaliation for some act of rebellion by the guerrilla forces (αντάρτες). The Italians, on the other hand, stole, pilfered, and plundered but were never cruel. I can still see the fear in her eyes thinking about her father about to be executed. I can and never will like or trust them.

So listen to a short story. In my village in 1940s we were occupied by Italy and Germany. The Italians, the leftovers of their army's food were given to children and hungry women, Germans spilled their leftovers in the sea. Now you know... 😢

Also, many Germans that were vacating here in Greece, after 2010, were acting like they owned us. Many times Germans would go to a restaurant, order everything in the menu and when the bill came they would stand up, tell the waiter that Greece owes money to Germany, therefore the restaurant owed the customer that meal, and would try to leave.

It blows my mind that someone should ask why we don't like Germany!!!

I was born in Germany and lived there until i became 9 years old. Things are exactly as you mentioned them. Imagine, when i first came to Greece and went to school, despite the fact that my nationality is greek, the first year, my classmates called me "german" and not by my name. And they always put the hand in the air and told me "heil hitler". And this was in 1996. In the end i realized that greeks have no problem with german people in general. They have a big big problem with german politics. And one last thing. German politics play games with turkey. German and turk politics are very bonded. We dont like this at all.

From my own perspective, my village, Kalavryta, suffered greatly during the war, leaving deep scars in our community. My father lost his mother and many of our villagers were killed. Today, we remember this tragedy through monuments and annual memorial events that keep the memories of those we lost alive in our hearts.

Also, you mention the migrants from Greece in Germany, which isn’t anything positive for the Greek state. Tourism is very strong in Greece anyway, Germans are some of the many different nationalities visiting every year. The problem is, Germany which is genuinely and deeply miserable and jealous of the Greek being in general, has attempted actually to turn Greece into the touristic resort of the EU. Thanks to the EU and thanks to the Germans, now we produce nothing other than hospitality for tourism. Before the EU we even had factories of Greek made cars in the mainland and in the islands even. We import nowadays vegetables from Germany, in Greece. We aren’t happy at all that Germans choose us for their summer holidays and that isn’t equal of us working in Germany. So it is not a relationship. Germans might perceive us already not as a sovereign country (which we should be way more than them), but as their summer resort.
