Shirley Sherrod is a former United States Department of Agriculture Director of Rural Development for the state of Georgia. Sherrod was asked to resign from her position by White House officials following the release of a heavily edited video of a speech she made, which had been edited to make her appear racist.1 In her account of the request made by the White House for her to resign, Sherrod states: "They called me twice,.... The last time they asked me to pull over the side of the road and submit my resignation on my BlackBerry, and that's what I did."

The speech was delivered at the NAACP 20th Annual Freedom Fund Banquet on March 27, 2010, where Sherrod discussed her own personal struggle with prejudice. She also discussed her experiences with racism throughout life and in her position with the USDA. Although Sherrod's speech lasted over 40 minutes, the video that was released had been cut to two and a half minutes of footage, making Sherrod appear to be a racist. The editing also made it appear that Sherrod had discriminated against a white farmer in her position as the director of Rural Development in Georgia.
